Incoming college students are depending on financial aid in order to attend college. Many do not have the savings accounts or big bucks to pay for a college education so they must rely on scholarships, grants, and loans to get a college degree. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is usually the decisive factor when applying for need-based aid. This program determines how much financial contribution can be expected from your family and how much from the federal government according to the cost of attendance at your particular college. Other independent organizations could use the FAFSA as well, if need is the major qualifying factor.

Career-oriented scholarships are also available to those who know what field they would like to pursue going into college. Most job fields have professional associations and these associations are generally the companies that sponsor career specific scholarships. The reason being that individuals of like career paths enjoy instant camaraderie due to their shared interests and also because certain career fields are in high-demand and monetary incentives are given in order to spur higher enrollment rates into that particular field, for instance, education.

Other sponsors desire the student to have a specific background in order to be eligible for their scholarships. Factors such as race, religion and gender take prominence when applying for these funds.  An example of this would be the NAACP, (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People); they are a historically black organization that focuses their scholarships toward African American students.
